It's ok to bow to a hunk of brass but not the Body of Christ Himself? The words—many of them, at least—were written by Thomas Cranmer, the Archbishop of Canterbury between 1533 and 1556. The Dutch could not believe that England was in earnest. During the late 20th and early 21st centuries, martyrdom became a terrorist strategy for suicide bombers in Israel, Iraq, the United States, and other countries (Prothero 2008: 248). This is not a power grab and if it was we shouldn’t be involved in it. In thanking God for "the Church of the first-born" and for "the spirits of just men made perfect" the Orthodox expects to find sympathy from them, and asks for their help; while he on his side considers himself bound to shew love and spiritual help to all the departed who need such help.

However, we do recall the huge scandals perpetrated by Jimmy Swaggart, James Baker, Jim Jones, and Jesse Jackson, just to name a few Protestant figures. This lie flies in the face of Matthew 16:18, as Protestants must then have to admit that the 'gates of hell' did indeed prevail, that the Bible was in error, and that all of the verses I have previously listed that promise the perpetualty of Christ's Church must be in error as well. Still, it was an eclectic and consoling document, the least revolutionary of the European Protestant liturgies.
